Spatial Body Sculpture

Cone 6 Electric fired ceramic, colored slips, stains and glazes. There is a light brush of acrylic paint to highlight the features. Part of a residency show at District Clay Center in Washington DC, “Vital Breath” explored connections between natural imagery and the human figure as a metaphor for particular psychologies. It was inspired by strong feelings about race relations. I grew up in DC and Virginia. I moved to the West Coast at 20. These residencies brought me back to the race tensions I had known as a child and, while at a residency in Appomattox, VA, I was half an hour drive from the Charlottesville car attack. There was also a confederate and a slave graveyard on the property of the residency. There was also a total solar eclipse that same month. I felt it was possible that a shadow passing over the light might be a catalyst for change in the people who witnessed it. I've actually depicted a lunar cycle, though, similar but something that happens all the time.
