About The Artwork

I stared at the colors swirling in a rain puddle on the asphalt of a parking lot and wondered where the colors came from. After all, there is no pigment in oil. I learned we see colors because light refracts slightly differently due to the layers of oil suspended in the water due to it's hydrophobic nature. I was enthralled by the concept the purity of the oil slick- it was one material, yet it produced a full spectrum of incredibly vibrant hues. Eventually, I thought, what if instead of adding a material to a surface you fundamentally changed the surface itself? I was reminded of the colors of titanium crystals, and as I considered this, I began to develop a procedure using anodization, i.e., an electrochemical process by which I could oxidize the surface of pure titanium to create pure color. After a year of experimentation, I figured out a way to connect a paint brush to a source of electricity and use electrolyte solution to "paint". I first sand and polish the metal to a mirror finish (which is extremely difficult with titanium) and etch the metal with acid to get ultra high intensity colors on a mirror finish. This piece consists of but one material; one element; one type of atom. There is no pigment; the hues you see are the result of microscopic irregularities in the surface created atom by atom, caused by Oxygen electrons reacting with the Titanium to produce Titanium Dioxide (a.k.a. Titania) from the redox reaction. The process goes along well with my maximalist tendencies. I have come to focus all of my artistic energy on this project because it excites me.

Kevin is a visual artist best known for his multimedia pieces, which juxtapose painterly and hard edge techniques, and for his work with anodized titanium. With electricity and acid, he changes the surface of pure titanium electrochemically. Kevin is most heavily influenced by Mark Rothko and Elsworth Kelly, and his work could be considered to be a blend of abstract expressionism and post minimalism. Kevin is certainly, however, not a post minimalist artist; he often covers every inch of every surface, including the wrapped edges of canvases. He often uses silver leaf prominently. The scale of his work is usually quite large. Kevin lives in Southern California and is currently showing his latest work at Bird Dog Arts Gallery in Mettler, California.
