About The Artwork

Wall installation made up of ceramic, earthenware and stoneware pieces, of variable dimensions. Mounting hardware included. This piece is part of the series of work entitled "Eyes - Nose - Mouth", in which the face is reduced to its essential elements, taking advantage of the micro-expressions of non-verbal communication to convey an emotion or idea. Another aspect worked is the association of certain physical characteristics with personality traits, in order to enhance the emotion shown. This group reflects on the difficulty to maintain happiness when in a group and the need for a certain isolation to find the point of inner balance that is the basis of well-being. The use of bright yellow glaze fixes the gaze on the central figure, causing the rest to fade into the field of vision, despite the violent facial expressions. Again, the visual isolation is key. The choice to use clay and other similar plastic materials not only allows a certain freshness of the final work but also the inclusion of the artist's gesture as an integral part of the pieces.

Sandra Borges is born in 1979 in Lisbon. The sculptor mostly based her work on human behavior. Sometimes looking through the stereotypes, sometimes through the eyes of a individual, it is always about how one's personality is formed and how one relates to the other and in society. Working only with Portuguese stone (marbles, limestone`s and breccia), she also mix it with other media if the idea demands it. The result is very personal way to make art objects that link the tradition of stone carving to other materials and plastic languages.
