This collage features six generations of women who are all guilty of having to be in absolute control at all times. They demanded and received instant obedience and gratification, some more than others, some displaying serious psychotic and sadistic behaviour throughout their lives. Nevertheless, none are blameless. The broken golden chain represents the sixth, but also the myth that they were all bound together with a golden chain that could never, would never break. I started by painting a representation of a facial xray which looks pretty macabre. It took a lot of planning to re-create the egg from which the spider is guarding her golden eggs made from strands of wool fibres and cotton wool saturated with gold ink. The golden broken web surrounding the "face" represents a torn web of golden chains. I washed and sterilized an eggshell and when it was dry, I painted all the pieces inside and out with clear drying glue. I then gave each another coat of thick white acrylic paint which strengthened it considerably. I painted the plastic spider black with the red hourglass on its back then I added the blood-filled crack at the top of the "skull" which is a symbol of a fatal wound which, like a blinding headache, is not visible from the outside. I hope that by creating this I have helped some viewers to realise that they are not alone.

I was born in South Africa and then studied for at Rhodes University under professor Brian Bradshaw. I lived in Northwestern British Columbia, Canada for 9 years. and during that time opened an art gallery (with gift shop), and a working studio where I painted and taught people to do the same. Although being a landscape painter using pastel has been a lifelong love, I now explore other media in an effort to express my strong thoughts and emotions\ . This has been a voyage of discovery where I have found new dimensions I was only able to dream of in the past. Please note that ALL of my images (C.N.
