VIEW IN MY ROOM
This painting was completed over nine months after we left our beloved neighbors and apartment in Chicago. My wife and I were facing a tsunami of student debt and could no longer afford our neighborhood. This painting is about love and grief and dreams and floods that change our course. My family eventually rerooted in the small city of Beloit, WI, nearer to my family. We will always look back on those sunny times on Gregory street, feel the twinge of sorrow at the blue wall that pushed us out, and give thanks for the friends we left behind.
The piece includes bits of found things such as a broken rosary, parts of snaps, half of a bead, paper cutouts from a destroyed Victorian poetry book, cardboard, and shoelaces.
