This image of revered comedian, Dave Chappelle, and literary giant, Maya Angelou comes from an episode of Iconoclasts in which the two met and interviewed each other. The conversation was beautifully genuine and covered a wide range of topics- the nature of celebrity, courage as a virtue, Malcolm X, and the creative process. Dave Chappelle - American Comedian, writer, producer, and actor. Dave Chappelle’s stand-up specials, film roles, and his massively popular sketch show- the Chappelle Show- have rightfully cemented his reputation as both a comic genius and thoughtful critic of American society. Maya Angelou- American Poet, author, composer, actor, singer, dancer and civil rights activist. Maya Angelou is probably most well known for her memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and her volumes of poetry. Less known are her achievements as a screenplay writer, playwright, singer, calypso dancer, film-score composer, director and actor. She was the first Black woman to have an original screenplay produced, and the first Black woman to direct a major feature film. As a well-traveled, well-connected and highly committed person, Angelou was also an extremely impressive fundraiser and organizer for MLK’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Organization of Afro- American Unity, as well as anti-apartheid and pro-Castro movements.

For Bubby’s and Azuca owner Ron Silver, creating art is a way of visually communicating questions about existence and experiencing the universality of beauty. Silver’s attitude about art is heavily influenced by Japanese culture and its emphasis on being of service to the community. Inspired by a lifetime of mentors and teachers from Alfredo Futuro and Egon Schiele to the Renaissance painters and Plato, his energetic relationships with the greats have guided him to be the artist he is today.
