About The Artwork

This set of works is a fantasy about the hybrid blend between bats ands hummingbirds, in their pleasured moment with a flower. The work was inspired on the botanical illustration, however it goes beyond when it proposes a new animal. In addition we can notice an observation about our contemporary world, through the image of a background of destroyed mobiles.

I'm an artist and illustrator based in Florianópolis, Brazil. Education 1998-2000 BFA at UFMG - BR Fine Art University. I have chosen to specialize in children's book illustrations and creative designs. My style and coloring process are predominantly hand drawn. I Looove watercolor and color pencil! These tools create a bridge between my inner fantasies and the stories that I want to narrate through textures and color grades, which brings presence and vibrance to the illustrations. My goal is to create images from a flux of sensations and perceptions related with nature. Therefore animals and plants are important characters in my work. Sometimes I also add new elements with photoshop, depending on the project. However my art always starts and develops with smells, surface sensations, natural light and plants which are around, these organisms more than inspire me, they nourish me and make ideas become real. "I was looking at the flower bed by the front door: “That is the whole,” I said. I was looking at a plant with a spread of leaves; and it seemed suddenly plain that the flower itself was part of the earth; that a ring enclosed what was the flower; and that was the real flower; part earth; part flower. It was a thought I put away as being likely to be very useful to me later." A passage from “A Sketch of the Past,” by Virginia Woolf. In parallel with the illustrations, I have developed a work with contemporary art and photography: www.carlalinhares.com
