VIEW IN MY ROOM
Drawing, Graphite on Paper
Size: 12 W x 9 H x 1 D in
I originally drew this to illustrate an essay I wrote for Paris Review. But my editor left and the essay went unpublished. I looked at the art the other day and realized it didn't need the text. It works fine without any explanation, which is the definition of Art anyway. I draw maps almost daily, extemporizing on the familiar shapes of continents and countries the way a jazz pianist plays around with melodies. Departing from the strict shape of something allows you to see the resemblances to something else, for instance how South America looks like a tree or a voice balloon. Italy becomes a boot that is drop kicking Sicily. In this drawing I focused on the tree aspect, the lush, organic contours of continents and rivers and peninsulas. I chose blue because of my affection for old blue willow china which I collect and use every day. We decorate the world with gardens and decorate our interiors and our mental landscapes with the bouquets we bring inside to keep us company.
