"Egeria" Artwork

The myth of Egeria, a nymph said to have been the lover of the Roman god Numa Pompilius, has been attributed to Roman mythology. However, it's possible that the story of Egeria may have roots in earlier mythological traditions. In fact, the name "Egeria" is often associated with the goddess Egeria, a figure worshipped in ancient Italy, particularly in the region of Lazio. Some scholars believe that the Roman myth of Egeria may have been influenced by this earlier goddess, and that the story of her relationship with Numa Pompilius may have been a way to reconcile the Roman mythological tradition with the earlier worship of Egeria.
