About The Artwork

When alone, my thoughts are filled with the idea that everyone I love hates me, the idea kills me, it feels like there is no reason to carry on. After weeks or months, I'm sometimes able to scoop myself out of bed and be outside, suddenly the sound of nature drowns out these thoughts, I take comfort in knowing that nature doesn't possess the ability to hate me, and I am able to find clarity. It's moments like these that none of my problems even matter. The devilish figure is a representation of myself, originally a form to represent self-loathing but now acts as a reminder to be happy despite my flaws. Liquitex Professional acrylic paint and Sennelier soft pastels on paper mounted on wooden board.

The work of Ben Gibson (b.1999) reflects the many ways the mind seems to process and balance sadness, loneliness and happiness. Drawn to vibrant colours and the tranquility of nature, the themes in his work often hold a contrast of pain and beauty, leaving much of the context to be decided by the viewer. Gibson aims to create a world within his paintings and sculpture, a place to immerse himself and escape.
