This common butterfly (Vanessa kershawi) is often seen here in spring, in its native habitat. I hope that you mainly notice pattern, and movement: I love to watch these insects as they disappear and reappear; they are masters of evasion and disguise. The butterflies' erractic flight patterns outwit the birds who would eat them, they are seldom still, making them difficult to paint, or even watch! I love being in the same wild environment as them. This is painted with artist's quality oil paint on a sturdy wood panel, reinforced with a frame on the back.

I have always made art in various ways, and earlier in my art career I focused on modern sculpture, often made with soft materials. One of the drawbacks of sculpture is that the use of colour is complicated, but now I love to use interesting colour in my painting, whether to render a life-like reproduction of a person, insect, plant or landscape, or to make a bold statement in my "message" pieces. I love the quality of the ancient medium of paint, both oils and watercolours. I also love to observe and draw the world around me.. there's so much to see, and point out!
