Like Fructose Encounters of the Third Kind, concepts of alien abduction, afterlife, and childhood memories are all conjured in my series, Beach Bumz. These paintings of landscapes and offbeat animals including bats, opossums, and raccoons help bring solace to my new life without my father. He was a veterinarian with an affinity for the down-trodden, giving me my own impetus to celebrate the kicked-to-the-curb animals. To be sure, the motley crew of animals are juxtaposed with fun-loving late night desserts hovering above the vast, color-stricken landscape. These works are a celebration of my father’s humor, those wonderful trips we took, and my own surreal sense of being a loner, as I navigate these new waters without him. Acrylic paint is the medium for these works as it allows for high texture and bold colors to express the vigor of the animals and the environments. The color palettes are specific to sunsets in both locations, to convey my dad’s sun setting. The large scale size of the pieces is meant to amplify the magnitude of loss, the vastness of these landscapes, and to show my dad’s humble, yet big heart and love he had for his family and our get-togethers.
