"Checkerboard Lemon Bowl" was inspired by a sense of creative freedom, and memories "making art" with my daughter when she was young. Although the painting appears to have the bowl of lemons on a plate with the check motif - it's actually the top of a wooden stool that I painted with my daughter many years ago for fun! This painting has a wonderful sense of design that incorporates the whimsy of a checkerboard pattern with a circular bowl of lemons. It was a piece that came to life very spontaneously. I happened to be cleaning my kitchen table and moved the bowl of lemons to the stool and as I looked down I just LOVED the arrangement and had to paint it. The palette of colors combines the soft beauty of gray paired with the vibrant cool yellows in lemons. More natural, earthy hues of tan and brick red are the foundation for delightful additional touches of indigo blue and soft turquoise that appear as shadows. I painted this on a gallery wrapped canvas in oils. The artwork comes ready to hang. It's a sophisticated piece with a lot of lighthearted fun at it's core.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
