In 2020 I moved to Florida. I was in the midst of a terrible depressive episode and struggled to find an semblance of relief. I was in a strange place, feeling isolated and lost. I had to take action. Creative engagement has always been a coping mechanism for me and thus, I posed a challenge to myself. For 100 days, I would create a plein air painting everyday. This would distract me from my depressive thoughts, it would help me to physically move and I would get familiar with my new surroundings. I did succeed and the work helped anchor me to my new home. 'Duval Island Drive' is one piece in this series. This road and hill are on the direct path to my house; they are symbolic of my climb from the depths of a significant depressive episode up to the green, abundant landscape of the island. The sky is clear, wildlife and plants flourish, and my mental health is on the mend. I chose gouache, ink and watercolor for their quick drying properties. Plein air pieces are typically quick and smaller scale and need to be dried for transport relatively quickly. The matte finished piece is painted on 140 lb cotton rag Arches watercolor paper, Holbein gouache paints, Winsor & Newton watercolors, and Sakura micron pens. All materials are archival. Piece is NOT framed

email is sdtompkins at live.com IG is stacytompkinsart I have work available in every price point Two-dimensional work: Inspired by microscopy images, themes of spiritual energy and hidden knowledge, my work explores the invisible realms in which we are enveloped, but rarely acknowledge. Sculpture: My mixed media sculptures focus on the psyche, ritual and meaning-making. The works deconstruct the transcultural aspects of ritual, sacred tool/ ritual object evolution, and the role biology plays in the archetypal development of deities. The pieces raise questions surrounding the origins of belief and spiritual identity.
