About The Artwork
This artwork is inspired by the photograph "Earthrise", a picture of the Moon's surface set against Earth. The photograph was taken during the Apollo 8 mission, the first human spaceflight to reach the Moon (the Moon landing would take place seven months later). Astronaut William Anders (1933-2024) took the photo on December 24, 1968, and it has been described as "the most influential environmental photograph ever taken".
