Embodied knowledge refers to what the body can do without being instructed, something that is apparently automatic like riding a bicycle. We have two ways of remembering, corporal through our bodies and temporal with our mental agility. This painting for me represents something that the body remembers, how to sit crossed legged. There are other ways to embody some, moving to music and imitating the sounds and movement of animals are just two. As a choreographer I find it essential to discover new thoughts and ideas by recording myself moving especially dancing to music.

Mark Baldwin is a dancer and multi media artist specialising in Painting and it's relationship to Choreography. He was born in the British Colony of Fiji. As a young child his Fijian mother took him with her to the ballet which she loved. At Art School he fell in love with the American Abstract Expressionists and the work they were doing with the great American choreographer Merce Cunningham and the composer John Cage. The scholarship he won in his first year at art school paid for the extensive training he undertook to become a highly trained dancer. Today Mark Baldwin makes lush often paired down paintings. They take the viewer into a world of a shapes which to him represent the human body, curving or bending into the picture space. The paintings go beyond the body evoking moods, gardens, sunlight and stories. He works between London and Silves in the Algarve Portugal. The paintings exist in time and space changing with the light. They represent a life time of work. The struggle for perfection and musicality, they carry memories and experiences pulled from the black hole of creativity. Presently he is Academic Visitor University of Cambridge in the Department of Psychology working with Professor Nicola Clayton FRS.
