Swiss fighting cows, la race d'herens, are a beautiful breed local to the savoyard region between Switzerland, France and Italy. They are a very stocky, determined, matriarchal breed. The inspiration for this painting was the pride evident in this cow's posture on winning a particular 'combat'. I found her beautiful and was reminded of a Maori warrior and so the way I painted her contains within it a kind of tattoo feel. The background is plain to spotlight the hero. I hope the viewers will enjoy the composition and technique and see the beauty, life force and vitality of the beast.
