About The Artwork

I am interested in the language of Western culture. I work in the space between realism and mannerism to explore the act of painting. This piece is inspired by a Bernini sculpture. The figure is an angel that has come down to Earth to spike St Teresa with celestial love. The painting explores ethereal romance, and our attempts to find the elusive beautiful moment. The piece was made with oil paint on linen on a wooden stretcher. It was created over multiple sessions. The process I use is slow as the work organically develops over time. It began life as a grisaille, a traditional method to make an oil painting of a figure before the colour layer. However it developed in a different direction from what I had first intended. I stayed with the monochrome, adding blue-green and warm brown accents to try and strip away everything but the feeling of the gesture. It somehow became a piece about timelessness. Signed bottom right of canvas and on reverse.

Most of my work is about feelings. I use childhood memories, dreams and day-dreams to begin. Sometimes I also work automatically, to bring subconscious thoughts to the surface. My current work uses characters to explore emotions and mark making. I have become interested in positive affirmations and my work has reflected this. My subject matter is often happy or sentimental. Process in painting is important to me. I explore surface, colour and spacial relationships, but not in an over-formal way. Oftentimes, it aids the initial thought and at other times it kind of disrupts it. Most of the time it ends up being about creating something in the space between or around the objects or beings I am painting. In recent years painting has become an increasingly inner process for me. l use traditional methods and materials that slow the process down, so the subject has time to develop, shift and finally take on a life of its own.
