About The Artwork

For this painting, I wanted to return to the beach. That was my initial area of thought. Having visited the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, I was thinking about a rocky beach. Somehow, I then thought of a glass of scotch whiskey - and how I like to enjoy a glass or two - on the rocks. That led me to thinking about a glass of scotch on the rocks that was literally on the rocks. With that thought in mind, I knew rock stacking was quite popular on lots of beaches. They're actually called cairns and the process of rock stacking is supposed to create a zen like feel and serve as a reminder of balance - in nature and in our lives. I'm not implying that a scotch on the rocks delivers any kind of Zen like feeling (though some might say it does!). I was simply trying to paint a visual metaphor. And so we have a stack of rounded stones standing tall on a rocky landscape, topped by a glass containing a golden-brown liquid, possibly whiskey, capturing a sense of balance and stillness. The background features a tranquil sea fading into a soft sky, adding to the serene atmosphere. I think not having any humans in the painting raises the question, "Who made the cairn with the scotch on the rocks?" Whoever did, this would make for a great painting or print to have in a den, bar area, man cave or anywhere that a glass of whiskey or scotch on the rocks might be enjoyed.

I am a modern day, self-taught surrealist. I paint ideas. My goal is to depict the impossible or at least, the highly improbable. When people view my paintings, it's readily apparent what is going on, just not always easily understandable as to why. My paintings will make you think and hopefully, bring a smile to your face.
