Duarte Camara grew up in Madeira Island, Portugal, then went to Porto to study architecture, now working and living in London. His roots, memories and work experience as an architect are deeply related to his works. Is interested in the urban landscape in how cities are designed and how they work, every detail is part of a system that represents the soul and identity of each city. Drawing and painting have always been present since childhood, where throughout his life, passion has emerged and been taught through practice. After trying different styles, abstraction was the way he found to represent the organic elements from where he was born, with the complexity of the urban where he has always been drawn to. His inspiration comes from all the variety of images we see every day in the urban environment, a street, a building, a green element or in small details, also his attraction to the relationship between shapes, textures, colours, and how we respond to them. The painting begins with a structure, it can be a geometric grid or a pattern of colours that will support the next layers, playing with them he builds and scratches the painting of the surface to reveal something underneath, creating a juxtaposition and interaction that are a reflection of compositions related to intentions and moods.
