About The Artwork
A Moroccan woman in a vibrant yellow robe is captured from behind while looking in a mirror and tying up her hair. Soft light casts her shadow on the wall, creating a contrast with the colorful strokes on the right. The Amazigh People (meaning "Free People") are the indigenous people of North Africa. I did a series of oil paintings in the 1990s highlighting the women of this very old culture. The people are changing rapidly with the invasion of Western Modernity, so my goal was to capture the traditional dress before it disappeared into history. I approached this painting a little differently than the others in the series; it is not as culturally specific and could be any woman anywhere in the world.
