This painting is one of three, all similar in scale and subject matter. I was making a serious effort to not put so much meaning, symbolism and general decorative over the top, over thinking. Instead of working from a subject or concept I decided to work directly onto the canvas. "Don't think of anything". "Clear your mind". " Put down some colour and work into it". so I did. And I came back the next day and painted over the whole lot apart from a bit of blue somewhere that I quite liked. The following day I did exactly the same and so it went on. I parked all three of my little Nuances under the big studio table. They sat there for some time.....until i started painting over them all again. They actually took longer than if I gone about the entire composition with my usual cautious and extremely slow development. Everytime I painted over the image I left a little bit of the previous layer exposed. Consequently, the paint is quite thick for me. The main difference for me, is that these three small abstracts did indeed "keep it light". All the little bits that I kept have become a whole that works well together.

My work is concerned with the layering of translucent colour and form built up over time to create ethereal and symbolic imagery. I use paint, gold leaf, digital media and thread to achieve this. My original degree was in education but after 25 years of teaching I returned to the University of the West of England to complete a Masters in Multi Disciplinary Printmaking, gaining a Distinction. My work took a total change in direction, from abstraction to figurative work which embraced the concept of "divine feminine" combining the intricacies of pattern with Gothic aesthetics. I have recently retired from a 36 year teaching career and plan to paint, potter and plot constantly. Like most women artists I have created a studio at home. I live by the sea in South West England. www.rachelcawley.com
