One of the FGM collection paintings. Female genital mutilation or reduction are terms that vary according to context. According to the World Health Organization, it is any process involving or total removal of female genitalia, without medical justification. FGM is practiced as a social and/or religious ritual in 27 countries in Africa, East Asia, and the Middle East. UNICEF estimates 200 million women have undergone this procedure. With the birth of my first daughter in 2002, this began to worry me. With my second daughter’s arrival in 2004, I began to think of the treatment of women in different countries. In Egypt, this assault is inevitable and obligatory according to wonderful religious traditions, despite being criminalized by governments. The clergy call for it. I sympathize by imagining someone cutting your tongue, so you can’t taste anything for life.
