A painting in the style of the "wild beast" Fauves, labelled as such by critics of the time who saw their style as rebellious. With movement founder Henri Matisse as inspiration, these painters who emerged circa 1905 used exciting bright saturated colors, thick paint, and simplified shapes and forms to break from the realism that emerged during the Renaissance and to open the door to 20th Century modern art. Ordinary objects of still lifes often became very unordinary due to novel Fauve perspectives on their lines and angles. Fauve works also celebrate the joys of everyday life via playful domestic settings -- including, at times, animals! Here, vivid pastels, stylized composition, and graceful lines lighten this capricious still life memorial to my late opportunistic cat, Max. He stole the fish off my plate if I walked away from the table for 10 seconds. I hope this piece makes you smile and chuckle. . .and reflect on the humorous transgressions from your own ornery household beasts. Part of my Fauve series featuring my Fauvorite animals -- cats, of course! This cheerful piece would fit well in a kitchen/breakfast eating nook (do not hang in direct sunlight as that degrades the paint color!) or casual dining area.
