Printmaking: Ink and Screenprinting on Paper. " Chapelle Saint Eugene" is a beautiful ancient chapel in Locmalo, Central Brittany. The chapel days back to the 17th century with its original stone carvings and engravings. In 2013 I make pencil drawings of the entrance and the intricate stone carved surroundings. The stone slabs in the foreground are relics of head-stones, I tried to include remaining fragments of the names and decoration and imagined the rest. I did not want to print onto white paper as it can impose a sense of lifelessness. Instead I chose paper that had a pink centre and added black Indian ink which I encouraged to run, thereby forming an arch. This would set the scene for the screen print. Sereis 2 has a totally different atmosphere to Series No 1. The puddle of pink in the bottom left appears to be evaporating and getting dragged into the black arch which is becoming transformed into a mythical beast. I like the thought of this idea as it sits well with this ancient building and its many secrets. Please visit me on : www.mariannesturtridge.com I am an art teacher by profession and enjoy the constant challenges of "problem solving" and frustration that goes with art. Teaching art has encouraged me to experiment with new approaches and draw from a history of art knowledge. My paintings seek to convey a range of human feelings from community to alienation, sometimes with a religious, mythological or fantasy theme. While teaching children with physical disabilities I explored themes on attitudes towards disability, illness and censorship. The foundation of my work is drawing, often evolving into mixed media. My painting style ranges from traditional oil and watercolour painting to experimental work in a wide range of materials including computer-based art, bas-relief and ceramics. Alongside painting I have made clay sculptures including torsos and shoes. I use my life drawings as a starting point when making clay torsos and try to capture something of the person in this work.
