10 Mark is from the "Notgeld" series. Notgeld means Emergency Money, and was used during the Weimar Republic Era in Interbellum Germany. This series, as well as several others, examines the notion of "Value" as pertains to the concrete and the abstract. Notgeld had little value to begin with, and inflation devalued it even more. However, most of it is aesthetically remarkable, at least insofar as currency goes. It is beautiful, and can be appreciated as such. Time passed, and this currency became utterly valueless. More time passed, and it regained value, a different, abstracted value, both as artwork and as historical artifact. People sell these bills today, for our version of concrete value. I incorporate them into artwork, in a small attempt to marry the two distinct value systems. Of course, the great irony here is that they are now listed for sale, in an attempt to insinuate concrete value back onto the bills. They have reached the end of one cycle, and are just beginning the next one.
