This piece was inspired by a desire to explore the visual aesthetic of merging multiple mediums and styles. The main female figure in the middle ground is finished with more realistic qualities and softer shading. The splash of flat paper collage in the devil horns alludes to a playfulness reminiscent of a toy or party favor. This juxtaposed with the much more sober expression on the face relays to the viewer that she is not a child. She is a grown woman or a young woman who carries around a great weight. The flowers near her head are bold and vibrant. The living skeletal bird in the opposite corner is quiet and unassuming. The bird sees her for who she is. These dynamics play out in a way that feels like she’s missing out on her own party. When one laughs to keep from crying, this captures the moment when the laughing stops. The patterned wallpaper-like background adds an element of surreality. The imagery depicted does not exist in a tangible, real space.
