Pink Bird is part of an ongoing series that uses 'character' to explore sentiment. These are creatures chosen specifically for their non-threatening qualities. I work with the characters to explore the nature of feelings, mark making and the subject matter itself. Pink Bird is gentle and quiet, rather like a real bird. I made the piece with pastel on pastel paper. I worked with flecks of bright colour and a background subdued by a process I use that fixes the pigment to the paper. It uses traditional materials. I wanted the colours to feel like they had always been a part of the paper. My work seems to be moving towards a kind of Contemporary Fauvism or Neofauvism. I am interested in human spirituality and the spirituality of animals. I want my work to be spiritually uplifting and to give positive affirmations.

Most of my work is about feelings. I use childhood memories, dreams and day-dreams to begin. Sometimes I also work automatically, to bring subconscious thoughts to the surface. My current work uses characters to explore emotions and mark making. I have become interested in positive affirmations and my work has reflected this. My subject matter is often happy or sentimental. Process in painting is important to me. I explore surface, colour and spacial relationships, but not in an over-formal way. Oftentimes, it aids the initial thought and at other times it kind of disrupts it. Most of the time it ends up being about creating something in the space between or around the objects or beings I am painting. In recent years painting has become an increasingly inner process for me. l use traditional methods and materials that slow the process down, so the subject has time to develop, shift and finally take on a life of its own.
