Once Again Once in a while I get that itchy feeling again that makes me want to turn to roundism. The last one by that title I made half a year ago. In between lie an odd couple of Geesje Kwak and Risque drawings. After the aforemeant last one I thought I was through with that style. Never say never again is what I experience as an artist though, over and over again. Now I see that the only thing that I have to do is to let it go sometimes. Do something else instead. Thinking and planning in series made me force to abandon a succesful style or series, in order to grow. Who knows what the tide may bring after a while. A Smashing Picture The love for textures in kimono’s (Geesje) and fur (Risque) has brought me to new insights. That was when I saw this incredible 1930s picture drifting by all of a sudden It seemed the opportunity was too good to let it pass by. Just like last time I didn’t catch the photographer’s name. I thank him or her wholeheartedly for the play with light and dark. It is not hard to imagine where Tamara de Lempicka got her inspiration from. The extreme tonal bandwidth makes everything appear conal. Forms get abstracted automatically, also by the hefty light source coming from the left. It shines right trough the body, lighting up only a tiny part of the lower right under arm for example. Such things are like artistic gems waiting to be plucked by me. Hairy Business The level of abstraction doesn’t differ from the reference picture much. It was a picture with a low resolution. I simply exaggerated some features and sliced them up roundistically. The hair is typical De Lempicka’s and I had ‘The Sleeping Girl (Kizette)’ in mind when I drew the hair in this one. 1969, born in Nijmegen. My work can be seen in many countries all over the world. Corné employs a variety of styles that all have one thing in common: the ever search for the light on phenomena and all the shadows and light planes they block in. His favorites in doing so are oil paint, dry pastel and graphite pencil. He states that it’s not the form or the theme that counts but the way planes of certain tonal quality vary and block in the lights. Colours are relatively unimportant and can take on whatever scheme. It’s the tonal quality that is ever present in his work, creating the illusion of depth and mass on a flat 2d-plane. Corné combines figurative work with the search for abstraction because neither in extremo can provide the desired art statement the public expects from an artist. Besides all that, exaggeration and deviation is the standard and results in a typical use of a strong colour scheme and a hugh tonal bandwith, in order to create art that, when the canvas or paper would be torn into pieces, in essence still would be recognizable.
