This is one of a series of city portraits I created in 2004. They were quickly drawn and brushed on quartered paper at the kitchen table. (I was keeping my daughter company while she did homework.) Familiar types, the kind of people I might see while walking to my neighborhood bookstore. They were originally published in The Believer. (McSweeney's also publishes some of my stories. These characters are just as likely to appear in the background in my fiction.) Inspired by city photography and city artists like Ben Shahn, Ronald Searle, William Steig, Ludwig Bemelmans, and David Stone Martin. My illustration work can be found at www.er-h.com.
