This piece is made using my unique surface of yakisugi wood panel where the wood surface is burned and sealed leaving a rich grained surface that is a satin black. It's a process long used in Japanese culture as a way to preserve wood from the elements and in construction, but as an art process it is much more rare. I carve away the surface revealing the image and in this case it is a hanging plant. When using a burned surface, an image has to be graphic. I love how the plant silhouette features some of the wood grain, but also the warmth of the wood itself. It's a small work and intimate and draws a viewer in only for them to discover the beauty of the image and material it is made from.

ARTIST STATEMENT As a wood block printmaker, I use the medium to draw with light and shadow. The organic grain of wood serves as a reminder of our connection to nature and the uniqueness of each piece. Plants symbolize growth and resilience, reflecting my own personal journey. Through a labor-intensive process, I create art that conveys the fragility and strength of life. My hope is that my work encourages viewers to reflect on their relationship with the natural world and find comfort, inspiration, and growth.
