About The Artwork

This entire series started as a gift for a dear friend who makes beautiful gemstone jewelry from rocks she tumbles and cuts herself - and I had so much fun with it and the subject matter that I've wound up continuing making a series of gemstone inspired paintings today. In particular: I love the abstract nature of how the cross-sections of different gemstones look, but I'm also genuinely curious about the different cultural meanings of each gemstone (and I hope these paintings inspire those effects in the viewer). This particular piece is inspired by my love of gradients and this particular color combination (yellow/red/purple) and seeing a couple neat ametrine specimens at a gem show. For those who partake in crystal/gemstone symbology, Ametrine is a combination of Amethyst and Citrine and balances masuline/feminine energy while promoting harmony with others. This painting can be hung in any orientation (though the current hanging hardware is in this pictured orientation, and my signature is on the bottom right edge of this orientation). The 2" edges are paper mached & painted all-around. This painting utilizes pH neutral unryu paper, and is sealed for color-fastness & UV protection.

As an artist and an engineer, I'm interested in experimenting with different materials and techniques in order to explore subjects like nature, astronomy, and geology; the impact of color and different color combinations on mood; and generally how to promote tranquility and calmness in the observer. I'm especially focused on making artwork that serves as a focal point for important, meaningful spaces in folks' day-to-day life, and have created many custom paintings for offices, meditation corners, and creative areas. I primarily work by building up colored layers of fibrous paper, and then depositing watercolor and acrylics - resulting in extremely textured and colorful paintings (that can also be lit up from behind!). My work is playful, vibrant, and meditative.
