About The Artwork
I first learned about Rastafarian, Benjamin Zephaniah, by helping my youngest daughter with her schoolwork during the second Corona Virus lock down. I was captivated by his passion to speak for others and immediately felt compelled to paint his portrait. There is a turkey watching over the famous Poet (represents his poem 'Talking Turkeys') and he is surrounded by the Jamaican flowers 'Hibicus' and 'Lignum Vitae' (Jamaican National Flower). A tiny Steamertail bird is also perched beside him. Can you spot the little mouse within the background. This represents his involvement with children's tv program 'Rastamouse'. I hope that viewers will see through his portrait what a brave and determined character he is. This unframed portrait is painted using acrylic paints on Winsor & Newton canvas board.
