About The Artwork
I have lived abroad for many years and visit South Africa regularly to take back just frames of the whole film but from the distance I seem to have not only a better view of the unfortunate 'Entwickelung' but have also aquired a sense of detachment from the Drama on a personal level. These works are part of my attempts to fill in the gaps of absence and one of portraying the social political landscape as I see and paint it. The clashes of interests, identities and especially the Afrikaner Identity is the focus of my series 'Bittereinders' - which derives it meaning from the word used to refer to the last fighting Boere in the 2nd Boere Oorlog/War... The present crisis facing the Afrikaner in South Africa is one of interest to me...
