The painting depicts the Myth of the Three Metals from Plato's Republic (Book III). Plato introduces that in an ideal city, there are three classification of people - the Gold children are the rulers of the city, the Silver children are soldiers protecting the city, and the Bronze children are peasants. This is in parallel with Plato's belief that all souls are made of three parts - reason (logical) part is the highest, an emotional part, and an appetitive part that is the source of all desires. When the logical self is in control over the other two parts, one achieves 'Eudaimonia', which is Greek for 'human flourishing.'
