Forsythia Print

Last spring, when it was still early and the only things I expected to see flowering were the crocus, daffodils, and tulips, I finally noticed the amazing huge bright yellow forsythia blooms at the edges of sidewalks and back yards. These are scraggly bushes the rest of the year, easily overlooked among all of the greens and bright summer flowers. In the early spring, right when we need them, these wonderful bushes are like sunshine on the ground with us. Last spring the brightness glowed for me like it never had before and I finally needed to make a painting. Like I do when I start a painting of a new plant, I look up its traditional uses in medicine and folklore. I didn't expect to find much, its such a common bush and I had never heard of it being used for medicine. I was shocked to find that it has been used for 1,000 years in China as a fundamental medicine. Google it yourself to be amazed at the value of this humble bush. I wrote down some of what I found out about this history and medicine and sewed or glued it into the painting. It is disguised as flowers and leaves. Please take a second look at all these weeds and everyday plants! They have so much forgotten value!
