About The Artwork

The title for this artwork comes from the number of lines in the lower left and upper right of the painting, and also the structure of four quadrants. They lines echo each other, despite being at right angles to each other and in opposing quadrants of the painting. The lines in black run on top of the pastel colors, also organized by quadrant, but not rigidly. This mix of structure and line with overlapping pastel areas provides a tension as well as integrity that serve to engage the viewer in a conversation with the painting about its potential meanings. I choose paper and watercolor and an abstract approach for a number of reasons, including, particularly, that the combination of these provide a fantastic range of expression.

I work in wood, resin, pewter, watercolor, sumi ink and other materials to create art that tells stories based on the interplay of light and shadows on organic shapes and spaces as we move through time. I believe stories and narratives are a critical part of what defines humanity, and that throughout human history until the wide dissemination of electric light, stories (oral and visual) were told in the context of sunlight, firelight and candlelight, each of which creates an environment rich in shadows and movement for both the storyteller and the listener. I aim to capture elements of that narrative richness in my art.
