Floral abstract created with acrylic paint on a fisherman's map from 1973. The area covers the seas around the Western Isles off the west coast of Scotland. For me it centres on the Isle of Lewis because that's my nephew's name… The map plays home to the bold outlines of the wild flag iris which is native to this area and is used traditionally in tartan and tweed. The picture combines the worn textures of the past and harsh coastlines alongside lavish curves with gold highlights and a sumptuous pink. The picture has been created on a cradled wood panel treated to archival standards to preserve the work. The wood has been sealed with Golden GAC 100, the paper coated on both sides with Golden soft gel medium and the picture given two final layers of protection with Golden UV matte varnish. The picture wraps over the sides of the wood panel and requires no frame. The panel has been wired and is ready to hang. Signed on the reverse with description and title.

You’ll usually see me thinking about composition, playing with pattern and testing spatial relationships, that sort of thing. As for anything else I think about how it affects all the above. I enjoy looking for unlikely structures and trying out fleeting interractions. The question of balance is never far away. When it comes to meaning, the torn and faded materials in my collages show where man has been. I suppose everything reflects an unidealised view of humanity. But I’m also attracted to the opposite, the wide expanses of nature (especially the sea) where there’s not much humanity at all. My influences may not be apparent… I keep coming back to Cézanne and Matisse.
