About The Artwork

This is a mysterious spirit being, perhaps mythological. It's patterned tattoo like decorated body gives it a tribal quality, I see it as a guardian of the forest - a protector. I feel a deep connection with nature, it's beauty and energies and I want to keep it safe. There is infinite wisdom in the earth, in the trees, animals and the stars.

Julie is an award-winning artist/mother/mountain biker/rock climber living in Kingston Ontario where she lives a fully creative life. Her vibrant paintings reflect this feeling of being total alive. Her works are lush painterly surfaces; a tapestry of bold brushstrokes and fresh fields of colour. Julie’s symbolic imagery of vegetation and figures in ambiguous landscapes reveal themselves through her intuitive mark making. This highly personal process has many layers of paint and colours that emote joy and a feeling of mystery – her figures are on a constant journey. Julie is BFA graduate from Concordia University and now resides in Kingston Ontario where she paints full-time. Her work has been exhibited in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and the U.S. What do the critics say: “The work is passionate, accomplished, engaging, and leaves the viewer anxious to see more.” Richard Moll, 1998, The Kingston Whig- Standard “It’s exhilarating to see an artist working with such self-confidence, setting herself challenges and meeting them so successfully.” Melanie Dugan, 2002, The Kingston Whig-Standard “A painter who is in full control of her medium and whose work demonstrates confidence and energy” (Melanie Cowell, 2014, Adjudicator for OKWA’s 25th Anniversary Exhibition in Kingston, ON. Melanie chose my piece for Best of Show)
