This painting is based on Archibald Skirving's portrait of Gavin Hamilton. It is part of a mini series of interpretations of portrait paintings that I love. The series is titled 'Outerwear' and I borrowed the poses and some of the attire from the originals but have replaced the sitters with a character that is a fictional version of myself. I am attracted to the overly confident poses and dapper attire that may have been the height of fashion at the time but now come across as pompous and verging on the ridiculous. Outerwear can serve the function of protecting us from the elements but also often a signals our tastes and status to others, whether its a cashmere overcoat or expensive kid gloves. There is something about knowing we are being observed and carefully curating an image of ourselves that really interests me: we get to edit ourselves and put our best side forward but in doing so we make a facade that is paper thin and sometimes easily seen through as ludicrous and self aggrandising. Signed and dated on the reverse.

Owen is a Scottish contemporary painter who was winner of the prestigious BP Portrait Young Artist Award in 2013. Owen's style can be described as expressive realism, where both observation and creativity play key roles. He paints figurative work and still life; the key focus of his work is to explore an awareness of impermanence and an empathy towards the inevitable passing of all things. Owen has had solo exhibitions in Berlin and Lisbon, and has exhibited in group shows in London, New York, Berlin, Edinburgh and Glasgow. His work is held in private collections in the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, The Netherlands, USA, Canada, Mexico, Singapore, Australia and Hong Kong.
