This was painted using a Polaroid photograph as reference. Back in the 70's my family (all generations) would often visit Leysdown, a seaside town on the Kent coast, UK. This snap was taken outside one of the chalets. I like to choose pictures that, at the time, would not have been considered to be particularly 'good' photos. The two boys (my older brothers) were clearly supposed to be the subject of the photograph but are framed on the edge of shot. My Uncle looks on from the window completely unaware that he's included in the picture. The whole thing is over exposed. Whoever took this was battling the sunshine though the viewfinder. These accidents tell us the true story and allow a heart warming insight and genuine depiction of the moment. This painting comes ready to hang in a floating frame that is 0.5" wide, this adds 1" to the overall dimensions.

Louise is an oil painter of people, places and people in places. After completing a BA in Illustration at KIAD, she had a successful career in television production. She has now returned to painting full time and works from her home studio in Kent, UK. Her subject matter is suburban, unposed and sometimes nostalgic. Louise’s landscapes are inspired by places local to where she lives, and explore locations which are often overlooked or ignored. Her paintings begin as pen and watercolour sketches, before taking reference photos and heading back to the studio for completion in oil. The figurative work and portraits range from people she knows, photos of strangers and more recently family Polaroids from the 70’s and 80’s. Louise’s style is representational but often uses muted or ‘ever so slightly’ too vivid colour palettes together with a ‘snapshot’ composition. By doing this she intends to elevate the ordinariness of the subject matter and evoke a shared feeling of familiarity.
