About The Artwork

Martin Burri's oil painting "Memory" is a visual investigation of memory. The title implies that the work addresses the different aspects of memory. The division of the painting into two represents the duality of memory: on the one hand, the vivid, clear memory, on the other, the fading or altered memories. The cool tones and textured surfaces on the left represent the changing nature of memory, while the warmer tones on the right symbolize the vivid and present memories. The use of oil paints and the abstract style of representation emphasize the emotional and psychological impact of the subject on the viewer. The work "Memory" fits into the tradition of abstract art, which breaks away from the representation of recognizable objects and foregrounds the visual impact of colours and shapes. The deliberate separation of the half of the painting reflects the exploration of the duality of nature and urbanity, a recurring theme in art history. A variety of materials were used in the composition of the painting, further deepening the theme of memory and remembrance. Dried large leaves and flower seeds preserved in hard wax oil give the work an organic dimension and emphasize the transience of natural elements. Wood glue is used to firmly anchor the various organic materials in the painting, symbolizing the permanence and effort to hold on to memories. On the right side of the painting is a piece of paper with real gold leaf, also fixed with hard wax oil. This noble material highlights the preciousness of memories and provides a contrast to organic transience. The use of these materials in the overall context of the work underlines the complexity of human memory, which oscillates between holding on to and letting go of memories.
