"Minya" was created specifically by the artist, as a tribute piece for The Creature Feature Gallery in Burbank, California, for their Group Art Show in honor of Toho Films release of "Godzilla Resurgence". The "GODZILLA: ALL ART ATTACK! 2" opened on Saturday, August 13th, 2016, and ran through Sunday, August 28th, 2016. Godzilla resurges onto the big screen in Japan this summer and Creature Features pays tribute with GODZILLA: ALL ART ATTACK! 2, a multi-media gallery exhibit showcasing works from artists in the fields of film, television, fine art, comics, children's book illustration, and more! GOJIRA debuted in Japan in 1954, and has endured through the decades in many iterations. GODZILLA: ALL ART ATTACK! 2 celebrates the King of the Monsters' latest incarnation in GODZILLA: RESURGENCE. Here's what Jonathan Morrill said about his 16x20 acrylic piece "Minya": "Growing up as a monster kid near Boston in the early 1970's, we had our area UHF station, WLVI Channel 56, which would broadcast Creature Double Feature on Saturday afternoons. Just like every monster kid in the country at the time, I would wait for this event every week, preparing to battle my parents defense of "It's a beautiful sunny day, what are you doing inside watching that for." The movies broadcast were taken from the classic Universal Horror movies of the 1930s to 1950s, the Hammer Studios, and Toho Studio's "giant monster" movies of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. My personal favorite "double feature" billing would be that of the latter genre, with the double billing of "King Kong Vs. Godzilla", followed by "Son Of Godzilla". If I was lucky enough to have a $1.50 in my pocket after the broadcast, I would appease my parents wishes by getting out of the house, and purchasing a glow in the dark Aurora monster model. All of these factors combined would create those golden Saturday memories. That is why I painted "Minya" gold, and why I captured him at the moment of his first screened smoke ring." * *From "Son Of Godzilla" (1967 Toho Films) Kaijū (怪獣) - from Japanese "strange beast" is a film genre that features monsters, usually attacking a major Japanese city, engaging other monsters in battle, attacking the Globe, or possibly another city. It is a sub-genre of tokusatsu (special effects-based) entertainment. Toho has produced a variety of Kaiju films over the years (many that featured Godzilla and Mothra) but other Japanese studios contributed to expanding the genre in Japan by producing Kaiju films and shows of their own, studios including Daiei Film Co., Ltd., Kadokawa Pictures, Tsuburaya Productions, Shochiku, and Nikkatsu studios.
