About The Artwork

In 2020, I moved to an island in Florida. I was already dealing with a bad depression episode and the subsequent isolation exacerbated my condition. I struggled to adjust to my new surroundings and to the lack of a social network. The only solace I found was in creating, yet even putting my hands to work was a struggle. I decided at the beginning of 2021 to force myself to create work every day to distract myself from my negativity as well as to help me learn about my new environment. Every day, for 100 days, I did plein air painitings. This practice shifted my mind to the beauty that surrounded me and helped me focus on new and exciting species to learn about. Fun Fact- It was only after I completed my 100 day challenge that I learned this is the same area where Winslow Homer painted his Florida watercolor landscapes. (en plein air- a 19th century painting approach where one paints outdoors, in the open air) The media I chose for this piece were meant to facilitate a faster working time. All water-based, the warm sun dried the layers rather quickly and made it easy to transport the pieces home. This particular tree is believed to be about 200 years old. Around the corner sits one estimated to be 400 years old. The ancient oak trees in the area have a visceral history coursing through them. The thought of what the trees have seen fascinates me and my goal with this piece has been to capture a snapshot of the landscape in a moment forever relegated to the past. I hope the viewer will find serenity in the image, a peace and joy that the landscape brought me in a dark time.

email is sdtompkins at live.com IG is stacytompkinsart I have work available in every price point Two-dimensional work: Inspired by microscopy images, themes of spiritual energy and hidden knowledge, my work explores the invisible realms in which we are enveloped, but rarely acknowledge. Sculpture: My mixed media sculptures focus on the psyche, ritual and meaning-making. The works deconstruct the transcultural aspects of ritual, sacred tool/ ritual object evolution, and the role biology plays in the archetypal development of deities. The pieces raise questions surrounding the origins of belief and spiritual identity.
