Inspired by the imposing oil rigs dotting the Cromarty Firth near Invergordon during my residency in Scotland, 'Rigs' Last Call' portrays a poignant narrative of technology intertwined with the natural landscape. This painting captures not only the stark industrial beauty of these structures but also reflects on the profound impact of human ingenuity and the evolving narrative of our modern era. Through the medium of watercolour, I sought to blend elements of Contemporary and Impressionism, imbuing the artwork with a dynamic interplay of light and colour. This choice allowed me to evoke the transient nature of these technological marvels against the backdrop of changing environmental and societal landscapes. I chose watercolour for its fluidity and transparency, which aptly symbolize the delicate balance between industrial progress and environmental stewardship. The choice of Contemporary and Impressionism styles enabled me to infuse the painting with both emotional depth and visual vibrancy, inviting viewers to contemplate not just the immediate scene but also the broader implications for future generations. As the oil era draws to a close, 'Rigs' Last Call' stands as a testament to our evolving relationship with technology and the natural world. I hope that this artwork sparks reflection on the past, present, and future of human achievement and environmental responsibility.
