About The Artwork
“Study: Delacroix I 2011” is the first of several studies of/response to Delacroix’ “Entry of the Crusaders in Constantinople”. It is also one of several experiments of combining oil and wall paint. The painting is made by first painting in oil on raw linen canvas stretched on deep edged stretcher bars, and then painting/pouring white wall paint a few days later, while the oil paint was only semi-dry. Some of the turpentine from the oil paint was absorbed in the drying wall paint, leaving a trace or shadow of the underlying painting in the top layer of white.
