About The Artwork
I chose to paint this portrait because I am drawn to the image of androgyny. This person has great style and I have tried to capture the feelings of confidence as well as vulnerability. I chose the mediums of oil on collage and canvas to give texture and depth and to create an impressionistic feel. The printed paper buried in the black and white check of the coat is from a brochure from an exhibition at The Photographers Gallery - Undercover: A Secret History of Cross Dressers This exhibition was partly inspiration for this portrait. The earring is real.

My background has been as a designer and illustrator in fashion. Over the last 12 years I have been drawing and painting and I am continuing my exploration of the human figure and my love of line and movement. Currently I am working in oils, pastels and with Chinese ink wash techniques. Texture and background are very important to me. I work from the background forward into the subject matter, allowing the texture and emotion of background to inform my line and colour choices. I am originally from South Africa where I studied fashion and worked as a designer. I emigrated to the UK in 1985 and carried on working as a designer and fashion illustrator until 2004 when I decided to concentrate more on my art.
