About The Artwork

I am inspired to paint from historical experiences. Themba worked as a gardener for a family in South Africa in the 60s and 70s. He was a strong determined man. I chose the vintage floral wallpaper to show the juxtaposition between the colonial life in Africa and the reality for the humans who worked on the land

One of Lianne's notable art series is titled "In their memory." This series incorporates oil paint, soft pastel, and charcoal, which are applied to authentic vintage wallpaper produced in the early sixties. The juxtaposition of the floral background of the wallpaper with the figures of domestic workers and their children symbolizes and echoes the lingering effects of colonial paternalism. Through her art, Lianne explores the complexities of history and power dynamics. In addition to painting private commissions, Lianne is currently working on the series titled “Goddesses and Gargoyles.” This body of work encompasses multi-media paintings seek to capture the intricate balance and fluidity between the fierce protectiveness symbolized by the gargoyle and the sensual beauty represented by the inner goddess. “I am particularly focused on exploring the duality of the Goddess and Gargoyle within myself. Through this series, which utilizes large-scale oil and charcoal compositions, I pay homage to the strength and vitality embodied by femininity. Each brushstroke and charcoal mark serves as a testament to the profound and ever-evolving relationship I have with these contrasting aspects of my identity.”
