Venus (Iris) marries two strands of my work; the idea of statuary being hidden/revealed by its placement in curated gardens or museums, and by its display in incongruous curated settings throughout time; simultaneously referencing unfolding flowers and its entrapment in material. The folds and colour deliberately evoke the medieval depiction of the virgin, contrary to its pagan origin; the blue iris, blue robes and the folds loosely forming the fecund mandorla iconography.

I trained as an art historian, gaining a BA and MA in art history and medieval art history respectively from the Courtauld Institute in London, and write freelance art criticism and reviews for several international publications. I draw upon a long-collected bank of historical images, combined with an analytical mindset honed by research and criticism, to create images that as much scrutinise the re-use and framing of historical imagery throughout time as celebrate it.
