About The Artwork

This painting is part of my ongoing 'Mermaids' series, which I have been returning to every now and then, since 1994. This particular one is the first one that I have created for 2021, and there will be more to come. This series is inspired by swimming in the crystal clear waters of the Greek sea, and especially those of Samos island. At the same time however, this series is about fantasy and flights of the imagination. Those of you who have been snorkelling, will know that the underwater world can play tricks on the eyes, and all sorts of light effects and colours can be found in the sea. This is my attempt to push this idea further, and to explore different colours, textures, print-making methods in order to create an interesting new world underwater. This particular work has also incorporated print marks made from various stencils (made by myself), plus marks made from a Samian sea plant that I had picked up on the beach during the summer.

Born and raised in London, studied Art, English Literature and History of Art at Harrow College of Art, Lancaster University and Reading University, then moved to Athens, Greece in 1994. Nature has always inspired me in my art, and I'm forever learning from this great teacher. We need to connect with nature in whatever way we can, even through art. Apart from my art practice, I'm also a freelance journalist/art critic. I have been covering the Greek art scene since I moved to Greece. I run the site Art Scene Athens, (www.artsceneathens.com, also on fb). You can see more of my work on my site: www.stellasevastopoulos.com, or on my fb page
